Hello Fellow Board Members and Advisory Members, The H.A.A. just completed another scholarship season, this being my fourth. The committee which included Steve Angel and Ed Horowitz (and a guiding hand from Bob Raskin), received 40 applications. Then on Monday, May 16, Steve, Ed and I interviewed 39 students. One young man was out sick. After the interviews, the 3 of us ranked the kids using methods that took into account GPAs, interviews, and great need. We had $40,000 to work with and we managed to make sure everyone received something. On Thursday evening May 26, the Senior Awards Evening took place. Ed, Bob and I were there to hand out the awards. Steve was unable to attend. We were called up first to hand out the awards. Bob gave a little informative speech as to who we are and what we do. I then called out the recipients’ names and the kids came forward. Ed and Bob handed the kids their packets. Ed made me laugh afterwards by telling me it reminded him of Lucy and the candy factory as there was such a convergence you almost couldn’t keep up! Thank you Ed and Bob for running that part smoothly! The rest of the evening was spent watching students come up for certificates from the many small learning communities of Hami High. There were awards for Silver and Gold Bearers who received silver and gold ropes to wear at graduation. The 4.0 Society received gold sashes. Just about all of our kids were in these groups. We got so many thank you’s from the kids after our presentation. But as I was ready to leave the auditorium when the evening was over, one of our recipients approached me in the foyer. She hugged me and thanked me for everything. I told her how proud I was of her. Standing next to her was her mother and I told her how proud I was of her daughter and that she must be so proud! She just kept nodding her head saying yes. This is what it’s all about. I can’t tell you how great I felt leaving the school. I was on a high! Thank you to the Association and to the Scholarship Committee for making this all possible! Love, Felicia
